The Dept. of Forestry and Fire Protection is looking to hire a GIS Technician to accomplish data capture of timber harvesting activities, fuels management projects, and other natural resource management activity.

Work entails heavy digitizing, attributing, and data management of File GeoDatabases in ArcGIS 9.2/9.3.

Experience:

Familiarity with spatial data concepts
Ability to read and interpret maps
Experience editing spatial data in ArcMap (understanding of topology very helpful)
Scrupulous attention to detail
Willingness to learn basic elements of the California Forest Practice Rules and various Resource Management programs administered through the department

GIS Analyst

Scope of Position

Support development team of commercial wind and solar energy generation facilities by creating static and Interactive maps for site analysis, presentation, publication for wind and solar generation layouts.

Reports To: Regional Director

Location: Escondido, CA or San Ramon, CA

Division/Department: Development

Working Conditions

85% of the time is spent in the office environment, utilizing computers (frequent use of ArcGIS 9.x, Global Mapper, Microsoft Office (primarily Excel and Access)), telephones and general office equipment. 10%-15% of the time is spent in the field, working to collect GPS or analytical data.

Responsibilities

Create high-quality static and interactive maps for site analysis, presentation, publication, wind & solar generation layouts.
Assess and validate model results from resource assessment team with respect to development constraints.
Provide spatial planning support, conduct analytical studies, and validate development constraints, permits, and conditions.
Use variety of multiple resources and data layers to develop maps and databases of property information for site developers, including project boundaries and ownership, wind data, transmission lines, etc.
Coordinate with corporate GIS staff to maintain standard management of GIS data
Support staff and consultants in analyzing sites for environmental & development permitting.
Coordinate use of outside consultants for additional GIS, surveying, modeling, analytical, environmental and development activities.
Assist in designing wind turbine layouts.
Occasional field work to validate proposed development via GPS.
Assist with in-house graphic design work for small publications.
All other job related duties as assigned by the manager or his/her designee.

Qualifications

2-3 years experience in using GIS software for analytical decision support and communicative cartography including:
- Data collection
- Site suitability analysis
- Vector data geoprocessing
- Raster spatial analysis
- Final, high-quality production cartography
Extensive knowledge of ESRI software including
- ArcGIS 9.x
  - Spatial Analyst
  - 3D Analyst
- Global Mapper
Experience using GPS technology to collect or validate field data.
- Trimble data collectors preferred
- Post-processing experience desirable
Working knowledge of the following is desirable:
- AutoCAD (Map3D, LDD, or Civil3D preferred)
- Scripting or programming for repetitive task automation (ArcObjects, VBA, VB, C++, C#, Python, AML)
BA/BS in GIS Geography, Envronmental studies or similar
Cursory knowledge of solar site assessment or software is favorable (PVSol, PVSys, etc).
Cursory knowledge of wind modeling or turbine siting and software is favorable (WAsP, Meteodyne, WindSim, Wind Farmer, Open Wind, etc).
BA/BS in GIS Geography, Environmental studies or similar.
Willing and able to learn new technical skills involving industry-specific software and or/techniques.
Familiarity with environmental issues, assessments, permitting, wind and solar energy, and electrical utility desirable.
Priority management, multi-tasking, flexibility, attention to detail, and creativity are required.
Applicant must be intuitive, accurate, hard working and professional.
Able to work with diverse group of individuals (county assessor/regional GIS agents, surveyors, land use agents, project developers).
Strong and clear interpersonal and written communication skills.
Ability to work both independently and as member of a team.

GEOGRAPHIC SPECIALIST
Salary : $40,752 - $72,286
DUTIES: The incumbent performs geographic support activities for decennial censuses and surveys. Geographic activities include: improvement of the Topologically Integrated Geographic Encoding and Referencing system, (TIGER); update of the Master Address File (MAF) for designated areas; maps for use in geographically structuring census operations; and geographic correction activities. In addition, the incumbent provides guidance, advice, and assistance to departmental geographers, statisticians, and headquarters personnel. The incumbent will be required to establish and maintain long-term partnerships with state, tribal, and local governments regarding the exchange of paper maps and geo-spatial data including GIS data and address files. Incumbent will communicate the designs, requirements, and timelines of census programs to federal, state, tribal, and local officials by making telephone calls, attending meetings, and traveling to regional conferences. Participates in training regional office staff to improve use and availability of TIGER. Participates in the hiring
and training interviewer staff to create additional address lists as needed. Incumbent will perform a variety of GIS analysis on data received from local governments to determine suitability for use in the Master Address File and the TIGER modernization program.

GEOGRAPHIC LEAD CLERK

DUTIES: Leads 8 to 10 lower grade employees who do digitizing, map production and
update census maps. Assists employees by answering questions and resolving
problems. Assists in the orientation of new employees by explaining work in general and providing on-the-job training. Edits previously digitized data for completeness and accuracy according to established standards and identifies and works to correct specific
deficiencies based on the editing. Edits may be performed using graphic plots or specialized interactive data edit systems at various scales.
GEOGRAPHIC CLERK
Salary: $29,405
DUTIES: The incumbent performs clerical support duties associated with the geography program. Works on Census 2010 geographic programs. Receives, sorts, opens, controls and routes incoming mail. Maintains correspondence files. Receives telephone and personal callers and directs them to appropriate office employees based on knowledge of employees’ areas of responsibility. Maintains a variety of logs. Maintains stockroom supply levels. Operates various office machines. Performs other clerical duties as required.

DUTIES: The incumbent of this position serves as a geographic secretary in the Regional Census Center (RCC). The secretary is responsible for receiving telephone calls and visitors, and referring callers to appropriate offices. The secretary may maintain an appointment calendar, advising individuals when appointments must be rescheduled, and arranging mutually convenient times. The incumbent also makes arrangements for meetings, travel arrangements for supervisor and staff, and prepares related travel vouchers and reports. The secretary receives and controls mail, routing items to appropriate offices. The secretary may assemble background information for supervisors, and notify supervisors of any pending delays related to the RCC. ENVIRONMENTAL ANALYST I - Contra Costa

Internal Substitution for Education: Experience in the classification of Environmental Assistant for Contra Costa County along with the successful completion of 12 semester or 18 quarter units of college coursework in the biological, ecological or natural resources sciences fields may be substituted for the required education on a year-for-year basis.

Experience: None required

Environmental Analyst II:

Internal Substitution for Education: Incumbency in the class of Environmental Analyst I for Contra Costa County may be substituted for the Bachelor’s degree.

Experience: Two (2) years of full-time (or its equivalent) professional experience in public infrastructure environmental analysis and/or activity which included securing regulatory permits and preparing CEQA(California Environmental Quality Act)/NEPA (National Environmental Policy Act) documents.

Land Management Internships - SSU Galbreath Preserve

at SSU’s Galbreath Wildlands Preserve

SSU recently acquired a 3,670 acre nature preserve in southern Mendocino County and has hired a team of interns to assist the Preserve Director with a variety of land management activities.

We hope to hire two additional interns this semester and are soliciting applications. Students can work up to 20 hours/week and are paid $10.25/hour. Applicants must be able to work on weekends and have at least one day during the week free to work at the preserve.

A partial list of duties is as follows:

• maintaining, developing and mapping hiking trails;

• installing signage throughout the preserve;

• maintaining species lists for groups of organisms found at preserve;

• mapping non-native plant species and initiating eradication programs;

• monitoring the progression of forest diseases (e.g. Sudden Oak Death) and feral pigs at the preserve; and

• providing logistical support to students, faculty and off-campus visitors that use the preserve.

Applicants must have background in biology, geology, environmental studies and/or land management. In addition, applicants must be willing and able to work in a rugged and remote location for long periods often under physically demanding circumstances. A valid driver’s license and safe driving record are required.

Restoration Trainee

interested in gaining field and technical experience to help implement
our ecological restoration projects. Work duties/training includes but
is not limited to CA native plant identification, seed collection, and
propagation, native plant re-vegetation, irrigation installation,
maintenance, and monitoring of restoration projects, invasive species
removal, and herbicide application. At times trainees will be asked to
travel and stay overnight to implement projects for up to five
consecutive days and duration of four weeks. _Physical Requirements_:
Standing/sitting intermittently throughout the day, walking, hiking and
climbing in rough terrain, able to lift and carry up to 50 lbs., working
outdoors in inclement weather, continuous bending and stooping
